here is the final list of 5 houses for design development:
1. drift house
2. hider-in-the-house
3. casa del fascio
4. barker house
5. 7 year house
ashley has stated that he would like to start with hider-in-the-house this coming sunday, february 24, 2008 and that we would spend 1 month and 6 days on each house. i would like to suggest a couple of thoughts about the process.
1. i believe we should start each exercise with a thorough program development study in which we determine the spaces and square footages we are trying to shoehorn the concept into.
2. i think the ‘kooky’ drawings that we fascinate ourselves with have maybe gotten us to this point in each of these houses and that we shouldn’t see the communicative drawings that actually clarify the solutions to our problems as an less fertile or as some sort of cop-out. having said that, i think we should have legible plans, sections, elevations of each house.
3. i think that although each house is different and should maybe exploit differences in representational approaches, that there should be some unity to presentation of the 5, as might be found in one of those books of houseplans.
4. i think that as with the kooky drawings, the sort of cryptic or non-existent communication we have cultivated over the last few projects might now give way to some clear dialogues about our actual intentions. if you look back at the pentagon discussions there is some real lucid back and forth about form, material, and composition that i think would help bring resolution back to our suite of capabilities. oh for the days of:
ashley elucidated: under the knoll, at the north end of the pool, i planned on some type of viewing area for peeping out the crypt. this should have a place for public milling and private sitting(standing), but i am not sure about a group of segmented rooms. perhaps the private areas could raised be on a plinth, or sunken onto islands (more like peninsulas) of differing materials. this could serve the purpose you mentioned of visitors finding a space in which they are most comfortable (cherry vs. fiberglass) and also to inform the general rabble of a distinction of use.
more to come…

“private areas could raised be on a plinth, or sunken onto islands”
are you illustrating the satisfactory results of open communication?
1. drift house
2. hider-in-the-house
3. casa del fascio
4. barker house
5. 7 year house
is that the order in which we are going to march forth? if we just draw that box that i fucking 3d modeled, then drift house would be the easiest. if we maintain the ‘narratives’, saul cups describes it, 7 year might be the most difficult. hider-in-the hosue house might be a breeze either way.
i approve of articles 1-4 in the proposal for action; i might need to be trained in #4.
btw, after more than a month of typing ‘house’ 31x a day, i still type ‘hosue’ first.
1. hider-in-the-house
2. casa del fascio
3. barker house
4. drift house
5. 7 year house
what about this roster? i dont want to talk too much about the specifics of each in this forum, but i tend to think that none of them will be difficult.
i still type ‘hosue’ first.
do you want to change the name of the project?
what about this roster?
ok!
do you want to change the name of the project?
no!
should we set up 5 individual ‘projekts’, similar to fort and habitat, or should we hold the (5?) works under ‘31houses’ posts/dialogues?
i think they should stay under the 31hosues banner. i was thinking they could get new names though:
house one - nee house 09 - hider-in-the-house.
that way you can type ‘house’ 3 times per house.
jx, thanks for staying away from ‘hosue 04 - née hosue 26 - hosue divided hosue’
where did you get the word ‘kooky’? did someone say that about the work!
saul cups went through all of the work and identified which piece of work was crafted by whom - with about 90% accuracy. when asked how he did this, he said that my work is ‘narrative’ while yours values concept; i am not sure what either means, but i think the result is that your work is better than mine.
saul cups… he…
give me a break!
i came up with kooky, nobody has said anything substantive about it to me.
my work is ‘narrative’ while yours values concept
no wonder nobody has said anything substantive about my narrative either. anyway, if i thought anything was ‘mine’ in particular i would have taken my mother’s advice and called the firm “john trefry and associate.”
btw, i greatly appreciate the critical analysis of the work by cups. would phe like to write the forward to our 6th anniversary monograph?
no wonder nobody has said anything substantive about my (http://www.ftground.net/?tag=plats) either.
maybe you should switch to ‘nice’ urls?

ha! there was more to it than that, but i became more offended as the critique continued. i’ll see if saul wants to contribute an feature article about the work.group - ‘the wrk.grp on the wrk.grp’.
i became more offended
also, 19 of the 21 minicards were what your mom would refer to as ‘john’s work’.
is it too late to propose a bonus sixth house?
the “honeymoon suite” in honor of your thinly veiled erotic banter? get a room!
hey john!
what?!
“honeymoon suite”
i assumed that was ‘a house divided house’
when you are done sledding and drinking soycocoa do you have anything to add to the above agenda?
hmm, i don’t know how much this adds, but here is a question. is there to be a prime mover for each of the projects - someone to sketch up the program? if so, is it the same worker each time (you, since you always run things)? or do we take turns? or is it the same worker who provided the original prompt for the house (or the opposite)?
i thought we could work together on it? i suppose someone always has to be first so it may as well be the progenitor of the house. looking back that would give you 3 to chair and 2 for me, although i dont think that person’s role needs to be any bigger than the other’s, just someone who gets the ball rolling.
i figured that someone had to make the initial post and would say ‘here’s the program: 2br, tines, spinning chambre, nudie lounge’.
if i have to go 3 times, i will probably look to existing habitats, like how i stole the program from house 30 - house from fallingwater.
maybe we can have the exact same program for all five (5) houses, then see where the narrative takes us. how is that for a concept?
maybe we can have the exact same program for all five (5) houses
i guess that should satisfy both of us? are we going to use the program from fallingwater? i might suggest that each house include a dangerous supplement as the seed for its narrative growth. we can start a program thread independent of the houses and then each job captain can provide the dangerous supplement to initiate the development sequence.
i believe the dangerous supplements are intrinsic to the original prompts. hider-in-the house’s dangerous supplement is gary busey; barker house’s is the lament configuration.
