work:
house a day process +

here is a 1st pass on which you can make changes/suggestions!

step one:
in the a.m. wrkr.a sends three items to wrkr.b:
(1x) theme. example: 1-word title of house, 30 word description of
client, 2000 word narrative of event on site, etc.
keep in mind that other worker won’t spend all day reading it.

(2x) fodder images.
examples: sketch, site photo, collage, screen shots, web-bric-a-brac, etc.
resolution should be highest available
images should be cropped to 1.33 ratio or 2.35 ratio (let’s discuss?)
the images should have the date or house number as a file name,
for example (house01a.jpg and house01b.jpg’) ((or tif!)
’spam_in_a_can.jpg’ or ‘grunger-adagio_0019IMG.JPG’

step two:
using the above fodder, wrkr.b charettes out a scheme during the day,
applying whatever technical means and supplementary fodder (created or
found) phe sees fit.
scheme can be represented w/ dwg, collage, images, forced perspective, etc
wrkr.b returns 2 to 10 images, of same proportions as step 1.
(image can be a ‘board’ w/ multiple ‘views’ of the ‘house’)

step three.
wrkr.a reads the images and works out (2? 3?) ‘hardline’ dwgs,
including at least one plan, w/ some indication of scale.
finished drawings should be arranged onto a predetermined artboard/paperspace,
and stored as a tif/eps/pdf/dwg*

*i know we, or i, always say this, and it never happens,
i think b/c we are too busy w/ other things at the end,
but i would like to make a sincere effort to have a fanzine something
for people to take away from the ‘exhibit’
i think that if our ‘process’ is nailed down in advance of us beginning
the work,
then it will be a simple matter to calculate how many pages would be
needed for the publication
well in advance of the final day or two
so, i would like to see the final dwgs in something easy to port and
plug in to indesign;
then every day/night, i can just take the 6 or 8 images, that are at
predetermined size,
and plug them into the template w/ ease.
this is my hope, anyway.
based on what you’ve already said,
i know you are going to be tempted to labour for hours on end on these pieces,
and will just wait until jan 27th to start handrubbing a month’s worth
of dwgs to then postal mail to me,
but i think that having the pieces complete each night will facilitate
the above goal (fanzine)

more to come

what say you?

as far as transferring files and shit.
i really don’t’ want to spend all day cutting and pasting links,
and rooting around for full size files when i see only a thumbnail.
as you may know, i prefer to keep things as tifs, for the sake of quality,
but it is annoying to have to post a jpg on the site, then go back and add the link to the tif.
i’d like to do everything in one place,
rather than ftp’ing some shit and posting other shit w/ the browser
i’ve looked for plugins or some other method for uploading larger files than we do with photopress,
but so far i can’t find anything that is ideal.
i did find one thing called ‘vault’, which lets you upload various types of files, apparently w/o a size limit.
you can browse the vault through the wp interface, and there are links for downloading files in the vault.

here’s what i propose.
the initial fodder can be posted on the site as a new post,
so the post has the text and two links to
if the two fodder images are jpgs, then you can just u/l w/ photopress like we’ve been doing,
and leave it at that.
if you have a larger file, or if your fodder is in tif, psd, or something else,
then you can upload with the vault and mention that in your post, and i will know to look in there for the fodder.
(there seems to be some function for attaching files in the vault to posts,
but i don’t see them show up in the post, so i don’t understand the purpose)

later in the day, the same can be done.
just upload w/ the vault and post a comment saying that the files are ready for step three.

i’ll go in there, get the files, then work on the stage three dwgs.
when dwgs are done, i’ll post the final copies back in the vault.

naturally, all this will only make sense if the files are properly named, so we can identify them in the vault…
stage1:
XXfodderA (.extension)
XXfodderB

stage2:
XXschemeA
XXschemeB
XXschemeC
XXschemeD
XXscheme…..etc..

stage3:
XXdwgA
XXdwgB

where ‘XX’ is the date of the month, 01, 02, 04, 23…etc
(i know that ‘01A-fodder’ makes more sense than ‘01-fodder-a’, but w/ the described set up, the stages will stay distinct when alphabetized…)

an alternative is just to email the shit,
which i would prefer to do w/ gmail, not my sisyphean acc’t

is this complicated?
test that vault shit out, you can find a link to it at the top of the wp admin page.
there are a lot of features like ‘tags’ and ‘link manager’, just ignore that shit and look at the ‘file upload’ (third from left)
i like using the site, but sometimes,
i would prefer to have some repository for work that is separate from the commenting/discussion system,
for the sake of speed.

(in addition to the working images posted in the vaiult,
for stage two/three, we can also save copies of the work to post in the comments or whatever for ‘fun’, if you want)

shit, last night, while the last of the cons was being swept away by the sand man,
i realized that i didn’t say anything about the size of the work..

i figure the 2 fodder images and theme will be presented along with the final pieces;
these images would be small, perhaps 4×6 prints.

the final (hand or cad) dwgs will be b/w prints, on letter or legal paper.

the charette images/dwgs (stage 2) will be somewhere in between? 8×10? or widescreen?

jt wrote:
do you get that much wall space?

ashley wrote:
i have no idea

jt wrote:
i think it sounds good, my schemes are ready for transmission, although i havent collected or produced fodder for them, i am concerned about being the person who works during the day, i may instead be sending you excel files in return, lets roll!!!

proportional constraints are fine with me, 2.35 might be more fun

ashley wrote:
i prb will be collecting more fodder than i produce;
i also plan to collect it only a few horus before i send it to you.

i don’t understand your concerns; you only have to work 1/2 the # of days.
wtf is excel for??

jt wrote:
horus kicks ass

ashley wrote:
ok
who is going to go first?
i figure it will be you?

i had an epiphany!
we don’t have to alternate days!!

if you prefer to have me being the schemer on weekdays,
or if you have some days ‘off’ in the beginning of the month,
then i guess we could arrange days to meet ‘our’ availabilities
i guess we don’t have to do 1/2 & 1/2, either?
send to me any ideas you have about which days
you would prefer to be the fodder sender vs. the recipient/schemer,
and we can work out a schedule

jt wrote:
go, as in provide the fodder, or design the joint? either way is fine

ashley wrote:
i should send the fodder to you on the 1st,
since you will be too busy on nye to compile it

jt wrote:
are there 15 weekend days in january? i guess i would prefer weekends, i could focus more, maybe, i could take the 1st and some weekend days, thursdays will be my worst days to take so if i could avoid those that would be good, i may end up traveling to austin sometime this month but i dont know when yet..

ashley wrote:
i don’t know, there are prb like 8 weekend days? we can avoid having you ‘go’ on thursdays;
i’ll prb be in vermont for several days, but i’ll plan to take my laptop and a pencil

i had suggested to [lwat] that we play ‘risk’ until midnight, she suggested that she would be asleep by 10, i will accept your fodder

ashley wrote:
doesn’t it take weeks to play ‘risk’?

do they have that on yahoo?

jt wrote:
it doesnt really take that long, it can take probably 6 hours? i think they do have it on there but i think it is part of the premium area?

ashley wrote:
i see
i guess i will be at the mah jong table

ashley wrote:
i put that calendar up so we can keep track of who ‘goes’ on which day.

if you think you might be going to austin later in the month,
you can swap with the days i have this week 2,3,4

it doesn’t matter who goes when or how many times, i guess.
my only concern is that i can’t ‘design’ a house

jt wrote:
that concern has also been weighing on me… i think the zine at the end should be like one of those books of house plans you get at home depot… “31 house plans by th.wrk.grp”

ashley wrote:
you read my mind!

i haven’t peeped the home depot books,
but i thought we might set it up where they are ‘for sale’
if you buy the catalog you can build any of the houses in there,
or, you get the catalog, then send $5 to us for the cds
