why did you choose that artificial(?) paneling?

can you use faux wood paneling instead of grey plywood?

i tried to call your phone from lowe’s yesterday and it said you were not accepting incoming calls. i tried sending a text message asking you to call me back and i was not called. so you get wood paneling. i think it looks pretty sweet.

don’t call that number anymore. you should have known not to listen to me, anyway. in case i later say, ‘can we use ‘astroturf’?', let me say now ‘don’t listen to me when i suggest we cover the work in astroturf’

you can email me your new number. do you not like the wood panel? i think it is interesting. it will mostly get covered up… right?

i love it; can it be lit w/ fluorescent tubes?

-ashley
[ 09h31m42 | 07.May.2007 ] [ link ]

absolutely. another meeting tonight with the curators(rixes), i will be bringing printouts of our drawings and installation progress. any word from senor kiser on his triptych?

-john
[ 10h02m39 | 07.May.2007 ] [ link ]

senor kiser here! i made it back from mexico sans diarrhea, so i’m in good shape. this saturday i leave for italy for a week, so i’ll be off the grid again.
i would like to have my triptych complete by the end of this week, but we shall see.
it will be 12″x18″ as i mentioned before. is anyone else working at that scale? does that even matter? probably not.

the wall looks sharp. fluorescent lighting would be sikk (in lieu of neon, of course)!

could you photograph or scan in process triptych before you depart? we are all curious.

-john
[ 13h15m58 | 07.May.2007 ] [ link ]

sure. i can photgraph it, as i only have scanner access at work.

i look forward to seeing “gemoid slugs” and “digitized pubes” overlaid on the conquerer tortoises!

grei kaiser was spotted walking down college avenue this evening, presumably just exiting a nearby salon.

-john
[ 18h47m31 | 09.May.2007 ] [ link ]

i got my hairs did.
the evening ended on a sour note though, as i followed a belly full of beers with a late dinner of shitty indian food (although even in my state i did manage to steer clear of the ‘grouper balls’ on the menu, which i can only imagine would lead to a night of dirty brown dishwater blasts…instead i merely had an angry shit when i got home). the channa masala was sub-par. please avoid desi spice at all costs.

take it to livejournal.

-ashley
[ 09h33m47 | 10.May.2007 ] [ link ]

i don’t know what a livejournal is, so i can’t rightfully take anything there.

please post images.

ashley, do you have to me the images you would like plotted to be adhered to the panel substrate?

-john
[ 15h17m52 | 18.May.2007 ] [ link ]

ummm…
i will upload the ‘hi res’ versions of time bandits / movie monsters saturday, and the ‘atlantic station exit’ images on sunday. is that ok?

-ashley
[ 15h24m48 | 18.May.2007 ] [ link ]

saturday morning would be good, and sunday morning, so i can plot undetected by the telescreens.

here is a sketch of how i think the wall will be installed. it is part painting on a gallery wall and part wall fragment. the wall in the gallery is a 6′ wide freestanding panel. there is a reveal on the wall at the floor that is about 3″ tall. above this reveal will be struck a white-painted picture rail of wood. the two wall panels will sit atop the rail and then be fastened to the wall with wire picture hangers that will have slack allowing them to hang at an angle from the wall. angle tbd based on incursion into the room and how much angle is required to allow the fodder and gray’s drawings to hang free slightly. thoughts?

so the fodder on the wall will be hanging off slightly? as in the tops will be fastened but not the bottoms?

i’m not sure that wouldn’t look “messy” (for lack of a better word). i have reservations about the wall being mounted at an angle, and would like to hear the rationale behind that.

-gray
[ 14h03m19 | 30.May.2007 ] [ link ]

the frame rail looks complex; does it even need the rail to hang at an angle? if so, could we use a large piece of moulding?

if it is to be angled, then maybe a massive gilt frame is necessary (to answer an earlier question).

-ashley
[ 14h11m13 | 30.May.2007 ] [ link ]

gray, i had thought that the angle would be slight. my rationale is that i thought having the piece at enough of an angle for the items to hang slightly away from it would encourage people to see that there are things behind that they can peep as well and might give them more comfort in lifting them away from the wall to look behind. i also just thought it might make it look a bit ‘different’ which is always a plus in a crowded gallery where people are just mounting fomecore to walls.

ashley, i think it would be really helpful to get the things up off of the floor so that is why i devised the rail idea. i thought it would engage it with the wall a bit more and be the minimal investment to make it feel like an ‘installation.’ it could certainly be moulding. i will try to find time to peep a home resources warehouse. about the gilt frame, i dont have one. i am not disliking so much the thing without a frame. i will try to post some photos of it in progress tonight and see what you guys think.

i was thinking it might hang at the same height w/o having to build a rail. i guess it would hand straight down and not angle, though, unless something was behind it. i enjoy the angle; i bet that’s how they’d hang it in the prado.

-ashley
[ 14h27m23 | 30.May.2007 ] [ link ]

the fulcrum mechanism could be much more subtle. a piano hinge? i just thought of expressing it.

-john
[ 15h10m51 | 30.May.2007 ] [ link ]

you are right; the rail/ledge/moulding would be superior.

-ashley
[ 16h03m26 | 30.May.2007 ] [ link ]

jt writes: unless you just happened to be coming down anyway or were really interested in seeing the piece on opening night i would not pressure you to feel like you needed to be there for the hanging, i foresee myself trying to make short work of it if possible and i dont want you to feel like you have spent the scratch to show up and then blame me for not having anything for you to do

i’m driving down on friday, so i will be available to take part any time from saturday to wednesday.

i am anxious to know what i could do down there and what input i may have. from comments jt has made, i am led to believe that he has already completed the projekt; if i show up at the gallery it will only be to tote in the boards and maybe drill some holes in the wall. is this accurate?

i will try to post some photos of it in progress tonight and see what you guys think.

can you?

-ashley
[ 09h42m06 | 31.May.2007 ] [ link ]

there will be stuff to do, but it will not be consistent. i am having sean come up with a stencil to paint onto the wall surface somewhere. most everything that i think will be adhered to the wall is already on it. here is my perceived sequence of events:

1. have all materials printed.
2. have any drawing/painting done on the wall surface before toting.
3. make picture rail at my house.
4. tote walls and picture rail to moda.
5. mount picture rail.
6. paint picture rail.
7. affix fodder and additional drawings to walls using pins, staples, etc.
8. attach mounting hardware to walls and gallery wall.
9. place walls on picture rail, hook to wall, and adjust angle/alignment.
10. evaluate completeness.
11. add more fodder/hand intervention.
12. receive kudos.

i will post photos asap, i seem to have lost my adapter.

hmm, so is #2 done already?
i can come by your place to help w/ rail and toting. i don’t have a pick up truck anymore. (saturday?).

or i can meet you at gallery for painting/hanging.

am i correct in assuming this will all be done this weekend? i thought that was your hope.

-ashley
[ 11h57m17 | 31.May.2007 ] [ link ]

i think the pieces will fit in my fucking honda. i was able to carry the wood home from lowe’s so i think it should work. it would be great if you could either meet me at my house or msme, probably msme is better for you, then get in my car, ride up to moda, we unload the shit, then i park my car and come back. i am checking whether moody will get us access saturday morning. i also, problematically, have a deadline at ‘work’ so i am hoping to spend about 8 hours total over the course of the weekend. i think that should be enough time.

-john
[ 12h01m13 | 31.May.2007 ] [ link ]

hmm, if i meet you at ‘home’, you’ll have to drive back there. if you are planning to stay at msme afterwards, i can meet you at msme….saturday morning/afternoon?
