Public Appearance: Hider-in-the-House House at SPSU

Many years ago, the work.group was compelled to create 31 houses in 31 frenzied days. The houses were sent to exhibitions across the United States; when the tour reached Philadelphia a young woman in the crowd came forward. She had grown up in one of these houses. Her family still owned the house in Downey, CA, and resided there with one small modification: there was no longer a strange man living in the walls.

This Friday evening, August 27, 2010 at Southern Polytechnic State University in Atlanta, GA the work.group will present their body of research on the serendipitous overlap of design’s impossibilities with the implausibilities of human depravity. The Atlanta Young Architects Forum’s Summer Salon hosts the REAL Hider-in-the-House House from 7PM-9PM.

it is the time of year where you have the rare chance to own a physical piece of work from the work.group just by paying for it — ‘rare’ as usually we are ‘too proud’ to put a price on work, and/or we are begging to just give it away. bring your bankroll to Studio 43 34 in West Philadelphia this Friday (5/28) and fork it over to benefit Philadelphia’s City Kitties cat rescue.

the piece up for auction, ‘m. tabby 1872′ is shown above, printed in full (2) colours and framed in the finest composite de-dumpstered from a baltimore avenue frat house.

all the cash you’ll put down for this piece will go towards City Kitties’ stated mission: “City Kitties is a 501(c)3 non-profit, no-kill cat rescue dedicated to saving and improving the lives of stray cats in the West Philadelphia area.” if you can’t make it to bid on the night of the auction, city kitties are more than happy to accept donations anytime of the year; visit their site for more information on donations and to find a cool urban cat who is looking to adopt a family.

the ‘opening’ and auction is on may 28th, but the works that will be available are on display at Studio 34 at this moment!

Selling House One

I have started piecing together a final narrative and working on final ‘presentation’ documents for House One in anticipation of the next phase of my career. It would be nice to have a few finished pieces to share. That being said, here is some compelling source material in the form of the plan book version of House One which the hider surely poached.

after jt dressed me down for not knowing how to use a compass, i dug out my pickett templates and did some ’sketching’, trying to think about some of the ideas we were talking about in the introductory thread – so, i am starting a new post to share thoughts about the mechanics of winston’s space. i am thinking this will be more ’spatial concepts’ than actual ‘deployments’ in a constructed arrangement of spaces. hopefully throwing some stuff in here will help when we actually start transcribing the life-scripts of winston smith.

Filing Nomenclature

This may not be as fascinating as our race with Houser Walker to release a holiday card but I would like to propose that the work.group move into the 1990s with an internal digital filing nomenclature apparatus. Information would include date, project, contents, etc. Any thoughts? Did you ask me to do this six years ago?
