Many years ago, the work.group was compelled to create 31 houses in 31 frenzied days. The houses were sent to exhibitions across the United States; when the tour reached Philadelphia a young woman in the crowd came forward. She had grown up in one of these houses. Her family still owned the house in Downey, CA, and resided there with one small modification: there was no longer a strange man living in the walls.

This Friday evening, August 27, 2010 at Southern Polytechnic State University in Atlanta, GA the work.group will present their body of research on the serendipitous overlap of design’s impossibilities with the implausibilities of human depravity. The Atlanta Young Architects Forum’s Summer Salon hosts the REAL Hider-in-the-House House from 7PM-9PM.

1005 100524 collage ckitties 02

it is the time of year where you have the rare chance to own a physical piece of work from the work.group just by paying for it — ‘rare’ as usually we are ‘too proud’ to put a price on work, and/or we are begging to just give it away. bring your bankroll to Studio 43 34 in West Philadelphia this Friday (5/28) and fork it over to benefit Philadelphia’s City Kittiesexternal link cat rescue.

if you can not make it to Philadelphia that night, you can have your bid placed by proxy by a member of the work.group who will be present. send your maximum bid to ‘work -at- sisyphean.com’ or, the contact form here. please send bid before 6pm on the 28th of May.

the piece up for auction, ‘m. tabby 1872′ is shown above, printed in full (2) colours and framed in the finest composite de-dumpstered from a baltimore avenue frat house.

here is a rehash of last year’s post, w/ the time and date updated:

all the cash you’ll put down for this piece will go towards City Kitties’ stated mission: “City Kitties is a 501(c)3 non-profit, no-kill cat rescue dedicated to saving and improving the lives of stray cats in the West Philadelphia area.” if you can’t make it to bid on the night of the auction, city kitties are more than happy to accept donations anytime of the year; visit their site for more information on donations and to find a cool urban cat who is looking to adopt a family.

artauctionbutton

the ‘opening’ and auction is on may 28th, but the works that will be available are on display at Studio 34 at this moment!

bid early, bid often, and bid high!

This may not be as fascinating as our race with Houser Walker to release a holiday card but I would like to propose that the work.group move into the 1990s with an internal digital filing nomenclature apparatus. Information would include date, project, contents, etc. Any thoughts? Did you ask me to do this six years ago?

alright cats & kittens, start putting away half your paycheck; you are going to need it for the 2nd annual art show and auction to Benefit Philadelphia’s City Kittiesexternal link cat rescue. on May 29th at Studio 34 on Baltimore Avenue in West Philadelphia, you can place your bids for CAT CITY, a rare non-digital artifact from the work.group:

now that it is almost may, i figured we aren’t having a ‘2009′ dead pool; likely because i thrashed the competition last year and everyone is too discouraged to challenge my championship. anyway, here is your new receptacle to deposit well wishes, so longs, and good riddances for celebrities and other cultural figures who shuffle off this year.

hail! get active with a new public action in the name of the wrk.grp.

manifesto excerpt:
Look at the streets around you, they are littered with the remainders of lives amidst objects. As we shed our skin we shed our objects, it has become human nature, the automatic response of the consumer. Every week, every day, a pile, representing a cell in the life prison of an individual, is let loose to the scavengers, or more probably, the elements and the dumps. Certainly we fight against this consumer decadence, why would you have something that was shit in the first place, why not just wait until you find the right thing to fill that spot in your heart. Certainly we believe that the folks should not waste resources, waste their time, and make do with what rightfully belongs in their lives. Certainly we believe in the stewardship of American Indian ecology, certainly we should “use everything.” But the schism has to start somewhere. As there are people at the bottom of the social bell curve using everything, wearing their shoes into oblivion, making housing out of your garbage, there must be those who construct the visual identity of culture meeting them from the other end. As artists, we can resist the temptation that places beauty in the palm of opulence, a bourgeoise construct that keeps everyone idly struggling, and place beauty back into the economy of ecology, the indulgence in the creative spirit of paucity, and the charge to “use everything.”

sketchbook
from the marquis notebooks: ft.stn.

despite the lack of interest from all parties, i have worked out the currently most satisfactory way of displaying the sisyphean notebooks. rather than making a new post for each sketch after uploading them w/ ftp, you can now just upload them via the ‘photopress’ menu, similarly to cafe tableaux. once they are added with photopress, they appear automagically in the notebook gallery; no copying, pasting, and posting is required.

be sure to choose the appropriate category (’sketchbook’) when uploading, or i will have to go in afterwards and do it for you, similarly to cafe tableaux.

someday, we might switch all the projekt images to this system.

Here is a forum to provide Andrea Korber of the Atlanta YAF with some material for her publication.

I mentioned in private email that she is requesting materials to cover the current Design Prescription exhibition submission by th.wrk.grp as well as documentation of any other current work.

The most current thing I can think of is still RuseVeldt as it is still taped to my desk. CafeTableaux is certainly a solid chunk of our work at the moment as well.

I thought instead of our usual impenetrable text that perhaps we could produce a catalogue of interests that might key the readers into our scope and affiliation?

clear your calendar, wednesday night, june 6th. as we never seem to announce it in time for you wrk.twnks to buy your plane tickets, please find with a kind window of notice, your summons to appear at the museum of design for the work.group’s 2nd bout with the esteemed institution as part of ‘the design prescription.’ having learned the ropes 2 years ago we merely seek to percuss the cheek of the casual exhibition-goer with the silken glove of our wit, a suitably delicate trifle amidst the farce of those who see design as the panacea to hyper-obesity and flock-logic. we just want to have a good time and work our asses off.

hail readers! after a long delay (so much for quarterly), a new feature article called ‘the completist’ is available. the prompt was to investigate ‘incompleteness.’ this dissolved into a study of intrasystemic incompleteness paralleling the rhetorical role of the titular edifice in kafka’s ‘the castle.’ this quickly dissolved into a critique of sculpture galleries, john portman, architectural photography, and merzbow under the banner of ‘the impenetrable.’ as is typical of us selfless sisypheans, the goal of the article is not to construct a hermetic argument, but to help rally the troops, to empower the kids, etc; if only the kids weren’t such illiterate twinks. peep here.

Dear Designer,

Thank you for your submission to “Depicting Design” at BAC Gallery. We appreciate your time, effort, and unique perspective on this theme. Regretfully your entry has not been included in this exhibition. It has been a difficult process for the curators, choosing 21 designers out of so many applicants. The work is all excellent, creative and diverse. This is only one of many shows we will be having in our gallery, with different themes, materials and curators. We look forward to seeing your work in future exhibits.

Thank you again,

proposal for an exhibition at the slought foundation (and others). bascially this is the graham proposal with references to a ‘publication’ replaced by ‘exhibition’

This proposal seeks to activate a collaborative practice of storytelling in the public realm using an allegorical narrative of ‘anything goes’ self-empowerment to establish a framework for the personal mythologies of modern America. This proposal includes the presentation of artifacts from archaeological discoveries as well as the written historical record of the picaresque travails of two heroes who inhabit the fragments of a collapsed United States of America. This presentation, hereforth referred to as Latest Unpleasantness, will serve as the concretized framework that underlies the resulting applied lessons of newly unhinged collaborations such as those freshly enabled by the release of licensing, open sourced media, and interpretive latitude upon architecture and urbanism.

you want me to feed you something, well i am not going to feed you anything, i am going to make a mess, you can have back what you have given me, what i have turned it into, let this misshapen dream be a cog in this mess you have built around me, your opaque city, i have had to get lost in it, be threatened by it, alienated, ‘warmed’ by beige and grey, and draw something on every opaque surface, behind which you conceal your grand narrative, which even you do not understand, i dont propose to understand what i do either, but i propose that it is not a palliation, that i will not give you something that you can swallow, or photograph, or quip, or inhabit, lean against, sell, market, or hide behind, because i will let cats vomit on it, let my work stain it, i will fall asleep on it, i will keep it in my back pocket until it falls to blank pieces, then i will let you pick them up and put them back together, i wont pretend to understand, because i know that you dont, and i wont pretend that you will make it yours, or that you would even think that it was your right to give it your livelihood, as long as you dont expect me to ignore what you have constructed around me.

…and if i have to watch one more little bird die on the sidewalk with its neck broken while people gawk and make light of it, i will burn your world to cinders.

Gary Kisser emailed:

Dood,

This Friday night (December 9,2005) at Aurora in Little Five Punx, the Losing Atlanta II show is poppin’ off. I think the opening begins at 7:00, and there should be some beverages, foods, and (local , I think) music. Be there to witness the unveiling of my latest masterwork entitled “Losing Atlanta II (Rem Koolhaus (sic) v. John Portman)”. Even though he’s Dutch and an egomaniac, I fall on the Koolhaus (sic) side, so it’s a pretty text-heavy blow to the Portman steez. Architecture art!

“The memorial in Shanksville, Pa., will also include pedestrian trails and a roadway leading to a visitor center and the actual crash site, which will be surrounded by a crescent of maple trees. The victims’ names will be inscribed on a white marble wall.

state park meets graveyard? ill bet the lobby is so strong that even if you won without a marble headstone the families would push to get one. i personally would not want to go and see the name of my loved one listed there, i would know they died there, and i wouldnt feel it was so important to get some second hand sympathy from people who did not even know them. i guess most americans are more interested in public displays of grief, and write texts like ‘lets roll’ to deal with their loss.

lets roll on to “a theory of roosevelt value

work.group imagesometime back I was invited to participate in a collaborative calendar project by my old colleague phyllis wong. the theme, for some reason, was ‘can you kick it’ and the assigned colours for our ‘team’ were yellow and green. i was assigned the 46th week of 2006. the following was my solution, based on a cryptic memo style i devised in order to write ‘you all are full of shit’ and ‘i hope your subaru explodes’ secretly during meetings. watch here for updates on how you all can acquire the full calendar featuring such design luminaries as bo sundries and yu-i chan!

you hard workers may have noticed some references to a publick chat that occurred this past saturday and have attempted to wade through the morass of composition which my fellow wordsmith and i shoveled around for several days. although i would be thrilled to see you cobble together your own damn presentation that tells us wtf you think the wrk.grp has cooked up, i have also prepared our version of the presentation in a feature article format for you. you may find, consume, and copy the piece here. as noted in a prior post, a certain silver tongue’d ease that accompanied the live freestyle of the presentation is lost in the text format. static though it is, it is certainly still on point.

hail proles, on the eve of mayday… for those of you who were not able to shell out the $35 or sneak into today’s art≠design symposium at the museum of design, the text and images presented, in a more formal package than was presented today, will soon be available in the features section. unfortunately, the witticisms and supreme ad-libbing contained in today’s oration, in which i called the room the symposium was held in ‘repugnant’, charged the people to ‘care about cinder block walls because some d00d spent a day of his life building it’, and said the taj mahal was ‘not a good building’, are lost forever, into the ether. next time y’all see dave webb you can ask him how much scenery was chew’d up thar. thanks to the folks i met, ecpk (east coast pk (perry kirk)), and the lightroom d00d (kevin byrd), and thanks again to laura moody for her help these past few months!

here is an abstract for a feature under development which is also being submitted for consideration to the ACSA for a conference in the fall at the university of louisiana/lafayette. it deals in some fashion with the work.group’s marquis project and its investigation of allegory’s role in the design of a practice. also investigated will be the shortcomings of post-enlightenment monotheism, kafka, and boots stamping on human faces—forever.

Greetings mesdames and messieurs, twinks and taurs,

The first book, ‘marquis’, of the work.group epic _ex_nihilo_ has been closed. For those who were unable or unwilling to attend the show at the Museum of Design Atlanta in person, the work.group has put together a virtual romp where the text and vignettes follow the same temporal order as the work in the the MODA installation.

The virtual show may be found at:
sisyphean.com/projekts/marquis/install

In addition, the work.group has compiled and made public a series of
digital images of the installation process, the work in situ, and the
fête d’ouverture.

These images may be found at:
sisyphean.com/galleries

Enjoy, furries

i know that no other workers care about this website, but as it is the only contribution which i make to the work, its utility and ease of use are concerns for me. i would like to see the front page have updates more often, but retain focus on the projekts as well. i think this news page is useful for the frequent changes, but the projekts are sidelined, and not all of the posts are informative to the casual viewer. here are some proposals, which can be unioned or subtracted:

  1. though we like to have all the innards exposed here, how about some categories for the news, such as ’site’ and ‘office’. all would appear on the /news page, but the front page would only show the category ‘office’. posts such as this one would be here for us to discuss, but not bore the new visitor. posts such as ‘we just won the contract for the mall of mexico’ would be on the front and on this page.
  2. a gallery of the work.group’s greatest hits. one slide show or page of thumbs with a selection of our most delectable delights, such as the trio map or a photo of a worker introducing a projekt to an audience.

our host is pissing me off. we have had multiple hours of downtime for three consecutive weekends. who knows how many clients and how much creativity this has cost us. i am ready to break off a refund and move our site to a new host. this would be the third time we have made such a move. this would also move ftground.net, i believe. moving mt is a pain in the ass. we also want to upgrade to wp. we will need a sequence for the process. perhaps, we will set up wp on the new server, then see if we can import the mt entries, then move the site. maybe we will move the site, install wp, cease making posts/comments for a day, then transfer the entries from mt to wp, then spend weeks retooling the layout. is it best to do all the damage at once, or in increments? this is the last of a rambling string of sentences related by content, if not structure.

john h trefry iv wrote:
“like i said, i have one such composition that could reside in a forum such as this, , we already have ‘texts’ right, hmm, are these things going to be initiated by ‘the wrk.grp’ or by ‘john’ or ‘ashley’ or ‘russell’, if they are pieces attributed to one of us maybe they are just accessed from our worker page, otherwise, /writings /compositions /ourtexts /features would seem applicable, would these be editable like our front page?”

your opening line contains the term ‘forum’, which, to me, is suggestive of your desires that this new section would be another place for dialogue, perhaps treating each paper as a mutable projekt or a sort of dialogue about dialogue. i feel that if the papers are going to have their origins in our personal interestscase 1, such as ‘ashley walks a lot and has noticed this’, or ‘john doesn’t like suvs’, then perhaps the papers should be closed elements – items that may instigate discussion, but are not products of it. i reckon that the features’ purpose is to make a statement of position to the masses, not necessarily to ‘work through some things’. in this case, the papers would not be made editable à la the front page. there could be, perhaps, a condition where one posts a paper, comments are made, and a new version of the paper is posted; in this case the authorship would be as open-ended as the desires of the original text allows – one author, no author, one author with comments cited.
another optioncase 2 would be a time when wrk.grp is asked to submit a paper or to include a statement with a competition entry or rfp. in this case, of course, the same document is tooled by multiple authors (as done clunkily during pentagon). for this, we could break out the wiki sections that are hiding on this site, which would allow constant work and citation of all changes. as far as the above ‘case 1′ is concerned, however, though i am a proponent of wiki, especially in the case when it draws from the entire internet as a knowledge base, i do not allow that it has the certainty or finality that would be in the features i envision. there’s a time to question, and there’s time enough for shoutin’.

regardless of how we treat the papers on the site, i don’t think we need a new posting area. i think the news is a suitable forum for discussing the features, as its history has covered site updates, queries on the future, and external miscellany. also, i don’t believe that the open- or closedness of the features and the place from which they are linked are mutually exclusive. i figure that there could be links to ‘john’s features’ as well as to ‘features, some by john’, without confusing the audience.

as far as the uri schema is concerned, i like ‘features’, as it makes it sound like wrk.grp has a journal – ‘journal’ defined as a magazine w/o ads, not as a diary[land].

also, i couldn’t find russell’s page; did you link it properly?

a platform for the dissolution of copyright laws and intellectual property?

“the question (is) whether an author is an organism engaged in the production of utterances, an activity which as a human organism he cannot avoid, even when alone and engaged in covert utterance, or whether he is an individual. so far there have appeared no grounds, save linguistic hypostatization and literary hagiolatry, for considering him an individual. the notion to be understood here is that he is but an organism and not an individual or monad or entity which can be differentiated from other similar entities… there is no reason why one cannot regard a piece of writing as the common product of all beings who have come in contact with it and reacted to it; when it is viewed in this way, any change, made at any time, whether by the original publisher’s editor, by the author, or by a later “editor,” has the same status and may be judged to improved the work, harmed it, or left it the same.” -tanselle

a faction of the workgroup will be participating in an upcoming symposium on electronic art that is to take place on a ferry in the baltic sea during august, 2004. our involvement is based on a found relationship with one tjaeger [sample work] that developed over the p2p network of slsk and spawned a collaborative musical piece in june, 2003. our presence in the symposium will be a remote one in which we will endeavour to discuss our thoughts on exactly this remoteness in the production of the diaphanous artifacts of contemporary culture and possibly create some realtime synergism.

it takes a lot of money to look this cheap. -dolly parton

almost two weeks after our move, i think we have exhausted almost all of the minor tweaks we cooked up, most of which would have passed unnoticed by the users. here is an incomplete list of recent changes. more can be found in this entry. a list of ideas for the site follows; feel free to add your own ideas or strike out others.

new changes:

  • updated links in news menu
  • reading list in worker profiles (optional)
  • removed excess boxes in projekts menus
  • format of comment author + link unified
  • search function for all projekts
  • imported pentagon
  • all mail not addressed to worker is trashed
  • site rebuilds every six (6) hours
  • new page for each projekt’s archive + corresponding .css
  • power to leave comment from toggling or individual entry page
  • removed preview button; added erase button
  • design of footers for all projetks unified

questions on what should be done:

  • apply .css to the pentagon papers
  • there is a plethora of images in pgon,
should we revive them in gallery format?
  • i think e2 should remain as projekt separate from ex_nihilo, as, rather than being a continuation, ex_nihilo is a report on, and uncovering of, e2
  • perhaps e2 should be proto_ex_nihilo,
    or ex_nihilo could be meta-e2
  • regardless of the name – we don’t need to change them – the question i suppose should be what kind of presentation e2 should have. perhaps the appropriate texts could be added -in or out of MT- to e2, and the work that did not make the dossier can be excised from the ex page.
  • have an ‘edit’ link in each post?
  • inline comment entry (ex.news) vs. pop-up comment entry (ex.projekts) for individual pages? pop-up is less on-the-fly, but inline is unattractive.

future:

  • title images in projekts given uniform names
  • include title images in each projekt archive
  • clean up .css for archives for consistency
  • include some info about WRK.GRP on front page?
  • more features in commenting, such as quoting/acronyms
  • news search
  • custom form buttons
  • something wiki somewhere
  • workers’ lounge in news
  • the links in the flash galleries of pentagon are outdated
  • menu bar in projekt individual entries
  • previous comments in projekt popups, w/ quote buttons
  • compare comment/blockquote colours
  • automated notification of posts(?)

edited 2008.12.12 to remove broken link.

i reckon we can invent something to work on; or we can find another competition or a new client. however, our conversations of late have made me aware that you have more interest in pursuing bourgeois domesticity than in shattering conventional myths of context, construction, landscape, memory, phenomena, representation, society, the urban, and the non-urban.

presumably we are agreed that every endeavour undertaken by a member of the wrk.grp is not an endeavour of the group. the group’s mission involves a collaborative process; does this preclude any discussion of independent work? can discussion amongst the members take place without altering the scope of the projekt? If you bring a projekt before the group for feedback, i would say that it remains your work until you declare that you choose collaboration instead of comments. for instance, a suggestion that you place your screen door in a direct path to your steps does not cast the wrk.grp umbrella over your porch.

our im discussion earlier today, coupled with my recent thoughts on my closing statements in the upcoming copyright lawsuit, rekindled my interest in crafting some form of constitution for the work.group. beyond the current manifesto, it would be a framework for the production of the work, rather than a declaration of its intent. i had originally intended to hack something together from the ideas behind the open source movement, as codified in the gpl, by exchanging ’software’ for ‘architecture’. however, not only is this forbidden, but my late dalliances in wiki have revealed to me that the gpl may already apply to creative endeavors as well. indeed, software is creative, as well, but i am thinking in terms of photographs, bitmaps, porch cd’s, etc. by looking over open source graphics, we find the creative commons has tackled this issue; there is even the ability to customize the license that fits our goals (my first notions). would this be something you would be interested in pursuing? Should we craft our own constitution? Should new workers have to ratify it? Should we maintain full control of the work, which seems impossible and detrimental to the field? Should things remain undefined?

yes, for the front page, anyhow. i am/was trying to make it more clear to the visitors what the site is ‘about’, rather than have them think/know that it is just a depository self-referential dialogue. naturally, you can amend this or revert to the previous system. the posting/news and all that still work in the same fashion.

our first year at sisyphean . com is almost up. now that it is time to renew our domain name, i have taken the opportunity to switch registrars (from dotster to pairnic). i don’t know what difficulties are entailed by this course of action. if the site is inaccessible for a period of time or if your emails to any of our workers are returned within the next week, you will have advanced knowledge of why these things are occurring. conversely, the transfer could go smoothly, and none of you would have been wise to the change, were it not for this informative post.

b, br/, p, strong, em, ul, li, blockquote, i

i am wondering if img src tags should be allowed. it would seem useful in that an image is often needed in response to a post. however, the lack of assuredness that all the images will be formatted consistently, along with my fear that the more uncouth of our many visitors would use the opportunity to post images of ‘manties’ or ‘cunts’.

it has come to my attention that the stats page currently has not been registering the logs since 21 july 2003. that has since been remedied, and the page now registers all logs since the sisyphean domain was moved to our new host last june. also, i changed the log analyzing tool from ‘analog 5′ to ‘webalizer’; i have not seen a display of stats by webalizer, but as i feel that analog 5 is lacking, i thought it might be worth it to try something new. look for the results shortly after 23h59 tonight.

As I scan back through the master archives I do not find my earlier post relating to the institution of a new piece of work for the group. This discussion emerged from the third competitive loss in the world architectural forum and was an attempt to pique the interests and creative powers of the group by excusing them from satisfying a greater concern for what DRumsfeld thinks is poignant decision making. This internal operation is known as a trio. A trio is to be a group of three elements bound together by a shared set of interests or direction. The issue here, is just how these characters are linked, how they may be linked in the future, or how physical or referential reality could be reconfigured to enable their relationship. We embark on something that at first reads like a detective story but is primarily concerned with weaving and probing a complete mixture of fact and fantasy before arriving at the depiction of a physical eventuality.

missing ‘working’ images from the pentagon project have been uploaded, and the project section has been relinked. links to the new ’stats’ page have been established. still missing from this site are the images that the athens office is responsible for uploading to the habitat section.

[update: subsequent site changes may render above information incorrect]

the index page should be operating properly, and all work.groupies should be able to post. the old entries that were salvageable should show up in the archives. once the email notifications of our posts and comments are working, i will begin the tedious process of importing all of the habitat entries.
