i know that no other workers care about this website, but as it is the only contribution which i make to the work, its utility and ease of use are concerns for me. i would like to see the front page have updates more often, but retain focus on the projekts as well. i think this news page is useful for the frequent changes, but the projekts are sidelined, and not all of the posts are informative to the casual viewer. here are some proposals, which can be unioned or subtracted:

though we like to have all the innards exposed here, how about some categories for the news, such as 'site' and 'office'. all would appear on the /news page,but the front page would only show the category 'office'. posts such as this one would be here for us to discuss, but not bore the new visitor. posts such as 'we just won the contract for the mall of mexico' would be on the front and on this page.
a gallery of the work.group's greatest hits. one slide show or page of thumbs with a selection of our most delectable delights, such as the trio map or a photo of a worker introducing a projekt to an audience.

the gallery would be a separate page, not related to mt or posting. (though we could have a category just for posting images...hmmm...) i was thinking something simple like the drag-and-drop process in transfer or the workers' lounge image management. the gallery could be linked from the front as well as throughout the site, like the features. i don't think we should use flash anymore because it is not as depeche mode as the rest of the site; we could be a little more intense yet square, like the photo gallery on angryredplanet.

as far as the text goes, it could just be the last 5 posts or just excerpts from them. they would be categories, similar to projekts. as you know, however, i want to make the switch to wordpress, so our changes will show up on the fly instead of after rebuilding shit. also, mt now costs hundreds of bucks to use, so we are crippled with this version. wp does not support multiple blogs yet, but they are promised in the next version. i don't know when that will be available, but i don't think we will work on these changes until after your lecture, anwyay.
we could just have one blog and like 20 categories, if we could remember to which one we are posting. do you prefer the three distinct blogs followed by categories within each, or do you think you would like to always post in the same blog, then choose from unrelated categories like 'news' and 'construction (text)'?

i think the only reason we had separate blogs was that we wanted distinctive designs for different parts of the site. if this can be done with categories, we can move to one blog. the multiple blog setup has required repetitive code anyway; maybe we can reduce our overhead in the future, since we aren't being reimbursed for it.

that is my favorite page on the site, except for maybe the 404 page and the recommended texts. I guess we can just have a box with the latest 5 or 10 posts of any kind, and dispense with the news categories. or we can have 'site news', 'work news', and 'fun news'.

or we can just have the front end be the archives page.

what do you think about the radial method of communication at this site? for examples: the fact that this question is nested, in a somewhat non sequitur manner with regards to the parent post; the recent query i had about ezekiel was actually inseminated by your post about texts before i carried it to fort station for delivery; the pentagongon station post is huge.

i understand the need for compartmentalization in the marquis, as we are dealing with the stations. do you think it is too tedious to track down various posts to leave comments? would you like to see a cross-referenced free for all where any comment can be thrown down at any time? do you like keeping the discussions in line and on a topic? do you read the comments in the email or on the site? should it matter to us if other people can't easily see when new comments are up (like in pgongon)?

i ask because we might think about moving to a more robust cms like drupal or mambo. i don't know if these are the best fit for our needs, either. i would like to see a meandering, open flow, and sometimes i feel this is stifled by the strict confines of the linear posting system. or, maybe we can stick with what we are doing, and just categorize entries better. maybe we have one 'blog' for everything, but you, as a reader, can click the category to see all the posts that are related ('pgongon', 'fun'). similarly to your demand that the project archives be moved to the front page, we can have last 10 comments or something, so brilliant new sputterings do not go unheard.

i wish that just by typing 'marquis', the word would automatically become a link to marquis.

it seems our texts reviews were full of spam comments. this is strange, as we have commenting turned off in texts (they must go straight to the cgi file; it is also fruitless for the spamsters, as none of their comments are shown.

when you talk about a sitewide commenting type set up are you referring to something similar to the archives page? i concur with your pride in that page, it is very useful. im not sure how you get out of the nested comments attribute though... unless there was some way that when you post a comment you list a few key terms or relationships that bind that comment in various ways, to other comments, posts, projects. i think it might all come down to the interface of a larger archivelike site though in terms of navigability. and i also think that some level of compartmentalization is effective when looking back at our increasing reliance on the comment style over the years. is there some way you can have both? a comment is bound to a post yet is equivalent in some other forum (archive) where it is then redistributed and bound again (to a new series of criteria (date, subject, project, reference, rating (g, pg, pg-13, r, x, xxx))). let me peep drupal and mambo and i will get back to you on those.

what would also be cool is if you could just drag an image into the comment box and it would be uploaded, formatted, and text-wrap'd!

i would like to take some time out to plug a product which has nothing to do with the work.group, but may serve as an advantage to it. i don't know what browsers are used by the other workers, but i have been using firefox for the past year or so. while it is a smooth and fast piece of software, it was nothing to push on others. however, i have been using the quicknote extension for several months, now, and i can not wait any longer to say what a tight and helpful tool it is to any writer, coder, researcher, or picture pirate.

our host is pissing me off. we have had multiple hours of downtime for three consecutive weekends. who knows how many clients and how much creativity this has cost us. i am ready to break off a refund and move our site to a new host. this would be the third time we have made such a move. this would also move ftground.net, i believe. moving mt is a pain in the ass. we also want to upgrade to wp. we will need a sequence for the process. perhaps, we will set up wp on the new server, then see if we can import the mt entries, then move the site. maybe we will move the site, install wp, cease making posts/comments for a day, then tranfer the entries from mt to wp, then spend weeks retooling the layout. is it best to do all the damage at once, or in increments? this is the last of a rambling string of sentences related by content, if not structure.
