you put two million dollars into a single family home, and we are supposed to be impressed that it makes it to the cover of dwell?

To investigate one universe, one must create a second one; the phantasmagoric diversions from the original serve as critique upon reality. Where the corporate collaborations of the office are tested and verified, this work group seeks to test viability of a model of collaboration with a more diaphanous boundaries. Whereas the old model of group work is bound by comfortable hierarchy, the new model is bracketed by noise and intrusion. Ex_Nihilo serves as a narrative vehicle to carry out such investigations; the interference which the workers of the office face is reflected in the counter-insurgency of Manhattanville. The modes of intra- and inter-office communication are the traces and scars etched into the walls and floors of the island; text messaging and file transfer protocol is replaced by an iron hook embedded into a stone wall; grooves cut into a crumbling brick.

The events described in Ex_Nihilo prove the Manhattanville secession to be a great leveling. We see the reaction to the phenomena of lifestyle magazines masquerading as academia. Urban professionals such as architects had been lauded as the directors of the city, as those with power to guide the live of the city’s inhabitants, yet when they are presented before the masses whom they supposedly are to control, the discussion is devolved to saccharine sound bites, such as the type of glasses or brand of cowboy boots worn by the purported intellectual class. The inhabs prove to find this insult to their intelligence as unpalatable as the idea that cast members from ‘Predator’ are elevated to the national political stage and to professorships at Harvard.

In a land of 35 million impoverished, the lives of those who can pick out Marc Jacob’s work by the stitching yet can not change a clutch plate barehanded prove to be disposable. The sedative of the promises of the better life found Dwell magazine and ‘Maid in Manhattan’ wears off as resistance is built within the genes of the inhabs. The value of Zaha Hadid and Jennifer Lopez to culture is equal.

missive: bernard tschumi was made to show his tender palms before his executioner was heard to declare you never held a hammer in your life

What will be the contribution of the pundits and critics or the theorists and propagandists? The inhabs search for lessons in the the vaunted ideologies of the previous age, but they encounter circular rhetoric and empty intellectual conflation that collapse like a house of cards torn to pieces by two million raw hands.

Those who specialized in their previous lives were not idolized or considered the bearers of sublime knowledge. they were the easy prey, the early targets, and the first to starve as they stared dumbly at their salvation, impotent.

As quickly as the architecture was the architecture was shaped into barricades and siege engines; the armory was bent into looms and pitchforks. The inhabs went to work on the city on their own; the only correspondence with the past and with their fellow contributors were traces and scars etched into the walls and floors of the island: an iron hook embedded into a stone wall; grooves cut into a crumbling brick. Through the conflagration, whether wrought by accident or design, no theory will endure. The history of Manhattanville and the cues for our inhabitation of the remnants of the experiment will be found in the dust of pulverized concrete. Books will be burned for fuel. Pamphlets will light the fires.

The question is where Mr. Diaz Alonso goes from here. Not long ago, a young architect could toil for years in relative obscurity, quietly honing his aesthetic language outside the glare of celebrity culture. While painful, the process allowed for the kinds of false steps that are so necessary to the creative process. Today, the few talents that get noticed this early feel pressure to claw their way up the celebrity ladder in pursuit of high-profile commissions lest they become yesterday’s news.

have fun, you hack, ill be at my desk.
